Lindsey and Christopher’s wedding is a great example of how DIY and personal touches can make your big day super-special as you will see in this Real Weddings feature! The two met in Iowa City in the spring of 2008, sharing Whitey’s ice cream in downtown Iowa City for their first date. Lindsey says Chris is full of cute surprises, which we can say is true of her, too! Not only did their thoughtfulness create an unforgettable wedding, but it also has helped shape a joyful first four months of marriage!
Lindsey chose a beautiful beaded lace Essense of Australia wedding dress for her July 6th outdoor wedding that took place at Celebration Farms in Iowa City. She accented her gown with a necklace, earrings, and a hair clip all from Meg Jewelry. She and Chris also rented tuxedos for all the men in the wedding.
Lindsey said, “Everyone was so helpful and kind, and was full of great ideas on my wedding day look. There were so many beautiful dresses (it was hard to choose just one!). Everyone at Hope’s was instrumental in making our wedding day looks come together from the first time I stepped in until I dropped off my dress to be preserved after the wedding. If I did it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing about my bridal look, thanks to Hope’s!”
The couple and their family were a joy to work with throughout the wedding planning process. Lindsey kept things in perspective, always having fun and enjoying her special moments, and still staying organized. She suggests the following tips for brides-to-be:
Make some room in your budget for last-minute details and add-ons for the reception. Attire alterations, reception venue rentals, fees associated with vendors, (tips, etc.) add up quickly! As a bride, the more organized you are, the happier and more relaxed you’ll be come the wedding day! I wasn’t worried about anything in the slightest on the wedding day because I had a “Plan B” for any mishaps, all contact information for all vendors ready to go, and a bridal emergency kit (tackle box filled with everything to fix anything: super glue, Band-Aids, bobby pins, static guard, deodorant, hairspray, you name it!). Thankfully, none of it was needed, but it was all ready to go, just in case. Enjoy the planning process; it’ll be over so quickly!
When the wedding day came, guests got a true picture of what makes Lindsey and Chris such a fun, happy couple. The bride made a lot of decorations for the ceremony and reception- a marquee with the bride and groom’s initials, date night idea jars for guests waiting in line for the photo booth, the ceremony programs (fans!), banners, personalized hangers for all the women in the wedding, and even the cake topper! The groomsmen received flasks and cufflinks of their favorite superhero to wear on the big day. The bridesmaids received necklaces, earrings, personalized stemless wineglasses, and other little treats. There were a couple of movies that snuck into the wedding décor as well; the movie “Up” and “The Princess Bride” made appearances at the sign-in table and in other places on the wedding day.
In the end Lindsey said the best part of the day was of course marrying her best friend. “We kept our personalized vows a surprise before the big day, so hearing them during the ceremony was so very special (and yes, there were happy tears on both sides of the aisle!). We also loved getting Whitey’s ice cream while taking pictures in downtown Iowa City (like our first date! We even sat on the same bench). Chris was hogging the ice cream, but the bride let it slide.”
It’s so special when a couple can tie in aspects from their courtship like Lindsey and Chris were able to do with their wedding pictures at their first date location!
After they tied the knot, the newlyweds took a “mini-moon” road trip to Venice, Florida for a week. They are currently planning a honeymoon to Eleuthera (Bahamas) for some time in 2015.
Lindsey emphasized how much she values living life with Chris. “Married life is SO awesome! It’s been a wonderful four months so far.” And she advises newlyweds to spend as much time as a couple after the wedding as they can. “Life is always busy, (and will only get busier!); it’s so wonderful to get some one-on-one time with your new spouse after the happy blur of the wedding!”
Many blessings on your marriage, Lindsey and Chris! We are so thankful we could be a part of your wedding planning process and the big day!
Faith, Hope & Love,
Lindsey offered the following recommendations of local wedding vendors:

E’s Floral in Solon was so fantastic! She made the bride’s beautiful bouquet, the bridesmaids’ and flower girls’ flowers, and the corsages for mothers/grandmothers of the newlyweds.
The reception was catered by P.H.A.T. Daddy’s of Marengo, Iowa; everything was so delicious, and they had wonderful appetizers as well!
Zephyr Weddings designed the wedding invitations and day-of essentials for the reception. Celeste at Zephyr was a doll, and oh-so-helpful in the invite planning and design process! Zephyr Weddings also has many reception rentals available for those extra-special touches.
Molly’s Cupcakes in Iowa City provided the cupcakes for the cupcake towers and the groom’s cupcake arrangement for the reception. They have the most delicious buttercream frosting, and their cupcakes are completely customizable for any wedding!
Hawkeye Photo Booths provided the photo booth for our guests, and we couldn’t ask for better service and props! All the guests had a ball, and it’s so great to have an extra photo album of all our guests that evening!
