“Love at first shot” is how Emily and Jacob began their story on their wedding website. The two Mount Mercy basketball players first crossed paths in the gym, where they would end up spending a lot of time together. Months later, they had their first real conversation that revolved around scars and their shared fear of needles. “We know… super intriguing conversation, but hey, it worked!” laughs Emily. Pretty ironic, considering Jacob would get his wedding ring tattooed a few years down the road!
In October of 2015, Jacob was sitting in a coaching authorization class, when something came over him. “God said ‘Marry this girl’ and the rest was history.” He planned an engagement that would come as a complete surprise for Emily in April. “Since our lives were so intertwined, anything out of the ordinary would bring on the questions,” Emily explains.
Jacob prepped everyone to help with the proposal at one of his family’s typical BBQs. Emily stood up in surprise when HER family walked in, and turned around to find Jacob on one knee. The BBQ turned into an engagement party!
They began to plan a Cedar Rapids wedding for April 2017 with a rustic spring theme. Emily found her beautiful lace Essense of Australia gown at Hope’s. “The best part of working with Hope’s is the home atmosphere and the relaxed sales approach. I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision. Ariel was patient and listened intently to my likes and dislikes of how a dress laid on my body. It was a wonderful experience all the way through.”
Emily kept reminding herself the day of the wedding to just “BE” and not stress over anything. And as she looks back, her favorite memory is seeing the genuine smiles on everyone’s faces. “It was so full of joy and happiness for all,” she remembers. Guests were probably extra-happy with the beautiful sunny weather and fun food options of pizza, donuts, and popcorn!
After the wedding, Emily and Jacob honeymooned in Mexico. “If you can make it work, it’s a must. You spend a long time for one day, so the extension of the day on a beach made it all worth it. We spent seven days in paradise as newlyweds and it was perfect!”
Congrats to you, Emily and Jacob! Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your beautiful day!

Ceremony Location: Mount Mercy University Chapel “This venue was beautiful, and wonderful ‘day of’ staff to help with all of your needs. Great spot for alumni’s!”
Reception Venue: Ushers Ferry Lodge “Another beautiful location in Cedar Rapids. The historic piece of the venue was a nice touch as well. The windows are big and provide wonderful natural light, the natural wood beams captured the barn aspect we were going for. Rustic and wonderful!”
Hair / Make-up: Virtue Salon and Spa “Those ladies are so talented. Jasmine Hadjis was my fairy godmother for the day. I LOVED my hair. Lindsey Faber did our makeup, and she is so, so talented and made me and my girls feel absolutely beautiful.”
Event Space/Rentals: Spielman’s “These guys are a brides best friends. Erin Martin was appointed our wedding and she listened to all my visions and made it reality. She communicates often which makes you feel at ease. I had limited rental time for the lodge, so Spielman’s set up my reception at 1:00 PM on my wedding day and the first time I saw it was when I was walking into the reception, and it was absolutely perfect.”
Bakery and Flowers: Oakland Hyvee “Our flowers and greenery were all from Oakland road Hy-Vee, Beth was appointed our wedding. Again another home run. I don’t know flowers at all, so she took my horrible description of my vision and turned it into my dream bouquet. We also had our donuts made from that Hy-Vee as well.
Catering: Maggie’s Farm Wood-Fired Pizza “This was so fun, and Jerry is so great to work with. He is kind and simply wants to make your day all about you. He did a full pizza menu along with gluten free options. It was delicious and just the touch we wanted for non-traditional wedding food.”
Popcorn: Amana Colonies Popcorn Company “Loaded baked potato popcorn. That is all. it’s a gift from heaven haha. But really these people were accommodating and hands down some of the best popcorn I have ever tasted.”
DJ / Band: DJ Shane Lunsford & STRAYS “Our DJ Shane Lunsford, and STRAYS were such rockers. Shane and his wife Bonnie are so professional and great people to work with, they have done so many weddings they know all the questions to ask you, that you didn’t even realize you need to have answered. They are great. STRAYS, Jacob’s oldest brother Josh is the lead singer, so it was a perfect nightcap to the wonderful day.”
