Hope’s Bride Kristen and her husband Jake met while attending Iowa State. They came back to their alma mater the day of their elegant wedding for their first look. We can’t wait for you to learn their sweet story and see the romantic pictures from their April wedding!
Kristen and Jake were introduced their sophomore year but didn’t start dating until much later. They reconnected at the end of Junior year, but Jake had an out of state internship that summer, so they didn’t go on their official first date at Hickory Park until that fall.
The next year and half flew by. Jake graduated in December 2015 and accepted a job as a mechanical engineer at John Deere in Waterloo. After Kristen graduated that spring, she took a job in the Des Moines area, so they spent even more time long distance. Finally, Jake found a position with John Deere in Ankeny and was able to move her way.
Jake proposed “in the most perfect way possible” according to Kristen! The couple had always wanted to camp out somewhere in the back of his truck to watch the sunset and stars come out, but they had never got around to it. July 30, 2017, he took her on a surprise dinner date and then set up his truck in the middle of nowhere. They talked, listened to music, and just enjoyed the evening for a while before he got down on one knee, completely catching Kristen by surprise! “One of the most memorable parts of our engagement was that because we were in the middle of nowhere, we had to drive and “town hop” our way back home so that we could get enough reception to call and tell our family the good news!” Kristen remembers.
As the happy couple began to plan an elegant and simple Des Moines area wedding, Kristen and her mom both found dresses at Hope’s Bridal. “Hope’s was absolutely FANTASTIC and I would recommend it time and time again.” Kristen found her perfect dress in our Davenport store, and then customized and altered it in Atkins with the help of Allie. “Allie was INCREDIBLE!! … I appreciated how easy it was to make it the dress of my dreams!” Kristen says.
Kristen says about her Hope’s experience, “All in all, I could not have asked for a better bridal experience. From start to finish I felt taken care of, and that my opinion was respected and listened to, not to mention the customer service was incredible.”
Kristen and Jake chose a venue with in-house catering, bar, and planner. “We didn’t choose our venue based on that, but it makes the process so much easier if don’t have to line up all of those individual things.” They also went with simple décor and lots of fresh flowers, which she says completely changed the space. “Not to mention that they will be in every single photo you take because of your bouquets. They’re worth the money.”
When it came to her bouquet, Kristen had a sweet surprise the day of the wedding. She noticed there was a pretty key and heart chart trinket tied to it. “I didn’t think twice about it, and assumed it was just a unique touch that our florist added.” But after their first look, Jake asked if she had noticed the decoration. He had picked the charm up at a salvage place in Des Moines to be her ‘something old.’ “It was the key to his heart. He’s the most caring and thoughtful person I’ve ever met!”
That first look was one of Kristen’s favorite memories from the big day. They went to the ISU campus for it, so it was really special to be back where they fell in love. She also had a sentimental first look with her dad and brothers. “It was so special getting to see and capture their reactions to seeing me for the first time!”
The other moment that vividly stands out to Kristen is walking into their reception for the first time. “Our venue had a mezzanine level, so walking into two levels of our family and friends, lined around the dance floor, all the railing, the stairs, you name it; every direction I looked there was someone else that I cared about. It completely took my breath away,” she remembers.
After the wedding, the newlyweds honeymooned in Grenada, an island in the Caribbean. They stayed at an all-inclusive Sandals resort. “It was so nice to relax and not have to think about anything or make any decisions for an entire week. The weather was perfect and we got to enjoy some snorkeling, an island tour, and lots of great food and drinks.”
The lovebirds are loving married life and coming home to each other each day! “Jake could not be a more perfect fit for me – I’m outgoing, a planner, excessively organized, and have a hard time going with the flow. Jake is calm, easy going, and takes things as they come. He is the most caring and thoughtful human being ever, can make me laugh like no one else can, and I feel so at ease being my quirky self around him. He can also fix anything (that engineer in him) which is not a bad quality to have in a husband!”
Congrats, Kristen and Jake! It was such a pleasure to help you and your mom, Kristen, and we wish you a lifetime of happiness! Thank you for being a Hope’s bride!
